Spreader Bars & Spreader Beams – What’s the difference?

It’s that time of year again, the BTCC season is on its holidays, which means that it is the perfect time to check, maintain the lift bars used by the recovery teams at the circuits, ready for the new season starting in 28/29March at Donnington Park.

At T&C, we have an extensive range of lifting equipment in stock, including spreader bars for lifting cars, lifting slings and roundslings. All of which are fully compliant with EN standards and supplied with test certification as standard.

Not sure what you need, a spreader bar or a spreader beam? Let us explain the main differences.

Spreader Bars

The standard design of a spreader bar features two areas to attach down to the load, and then another two areas to attach up to the crane.

The lines going down to the load need to be as vertical as possible to ensure a safe lift, and the lines going up to the crane are diagonal to meet at the crane at one place.

This spreader bar setup allows you to attach the load at two points, which spreads the load more evenly and makes for an easier lift. The bar is specifically made to be extremely durable, so that it can handle the two loading points without any bending or breaking.

Spreader Beams

The main difference between spreader bars and spreader beams, is that spreader beams have only one area you load on the top of the bar which attaches to the crane, and then multiple loading areas on the bottom of the bar to attach to whatever you need to lift.

The main advantage of spreader beams compared to bars is that you can spread the load over more areas than just the two that spreader bars allow for. This is useful for loading things that can’t support themselves when being lifted from just two places.
