Basic Guide To Using Ratchet Lashing Straps Correctly

If you work in logistics, you’ll know how important ratchet straps can be when transporting goods across the country.

Their reliable fastening capabilities are absolutely paramount for a safe and secure delivery, without which, you’re putting fellow drivers at serious risk.

But, do you know how these should be used correctly? Below are some of the basic steps you must follow when deploying ratchet straps.

Opening Up The Ratchet

Your ratchet will come with a release catch, usually found within the centre. You simply pull this to release the catch, which then opens up the entire ratchet.

Threading Your Strap

Once the release catch has been opened up, it should be easy to thread through your strap.

To push more strapping through the ratchet, you’ll need to hold the release catch from underneath and start passing this through what’s known as the mandrel, which holds the length of your ratchet.

This should be done until your ratchet feels stiff.

Placing Your Goods

Firstly, position your cargo in a suitable position, as this will be where it stays for the duration of your journey.

When you’re happy, the ratchet straps can be loosely placed across the cargo, after which, you’ll need to hook the ends of your ratchet into the grooves found on your vehicle.

Making Things Safe & Secure

Pull on the strap until it’s absolutely secure. If you need to pull your strap back and forth to achieve optimum strength, then always do this.

It’s important to tightly secure cargo, but overkill can also be a problem, since this may cause damage to your goods.

Locking Your Cargo Down

The final measure will be locking this into place, which requires you to click the ratchet, as this permanently holds everything in position.
